Art making isn’t something that we do to achieve, to master, to produce, to skill-build…it’s actually a way of being. Art making is an inherently human act; it’s hardwired into our DNA to create. Reconnecting with your creative self is a reclamation of your wholeness, your humanness, and therefore a profoundly impactful revolutionary act. So much of our personal and collective suffering is due to our creativity, our imagination, our playfulness, resourcefulness, and curious nature being controlled and shut down. Creative expression is in direct opposition to oppression because it is actively and boldly practicing saying “you cannot shut down my Aliveness. You will not disconnect me from my humanness. I am alive and my Aliveness has value” It is honoring the fluid, the wild, the unknown, the untamed, the uncontrollable, the undefinable, the playful, the free.
The Intuitive Painting for Liberation practice isn’t just about painting and making art, it’s a way of life, a Liberation practice, a way to house the process of healing from and unlearning internalized oppression. This process allows you to completely reshape the way your nervous system functions. And it’s not about ignoring reality, controlling our emotional states, bypassing harm and oppressive systems, or denying our personal and collective suffering. This practice is about truly and deeply embracing the full complexity of our wholeness, the messiness of being human, and increasing our capacity to stay in our bodies, in our hearts, and in our integrity in the midst of it all. We don’t practice to avoid reality, we practice to be able to stay with it and our ourselves more fully, honestly, and authentically. Creating art in the face of suffering and the horrors of the world isn’t frivolous, naive, or passive, it is actually a way of reclaiming our wholeness and committing to not allowing the powers that be to numb us and shut us down to our connection to the Aliveness inside of us and all beings.
So, we make art to practice being free. We make art to envision new worlds and new realities. We make art to honor the aliveness inside of ourselves. We make art to dance with the divine. We make art to touch the hearts of those around us near and far. We make art to feel the joy and power of imagining. We make art because the energy is too big and loud not to listen.
It’s a wild ride, this existence thing. It’s a long road, this journey towards liberation. It’s a tender web, this Aliveness inside us. It’s an ongoing practice, this sacred UNlearning. Let us stay in our humanness together, hand in hand, one brushstroke at a time.
This isn't about making pretty paintings or "fixing" ourselves, this is a practice space to begin noticing all the ways that our judging, critical mind shuts down our Aliveness, and an invitation to practice doing something different. It is a chance to be fully present with our full selves while in sacred community, with skillful, unconditional encouragement and support, and see what can happen.
Because you are you, everything you paint is a form of self-portrait. So while you are painting, the inner critic (internalized oppression), will begin to show up in various ways, trying to get you to stay small, contained, "perfect", understandable, within the lines, clean, pretty, calm, etc. The power of this practice is that what comes up in painting, the critiques, the judgements, the comparisons, the self-doubt, the fear, the shame, the vulnerability, etc, are the same things that come up in our lives. But in our daily lives we tend to both consciously and unconsciously absorb these rules, barriers and harsh critiques thinking they are us, or more often not even being conscious of how much they are controlling us and our behaviors. Or, we try to run from, avoid, hide, fix, obsess over or try to control these voices, in return burning ourselves out and accidentally oppressing ourselves in our attempt to heal.
Because of the visual nature of art and the vulnerability of being seen, these judgements and critiques naturally arise in class where you have the opportunity to sit with and work with them in an intentional, supported way from and from a new perspective. So when participants feel their painting is too bright, too big, too messy, too intense, too joyful, too angry, too meaningless, too intense, too whatever, that insecurity reflects a self-judgment that is being illuminated. When you worry you've made a "mistake" and have "ruined" your painting, you are actually coming up against some internal rule, experience, feeling or judgement that you carry. And your nervous system doesn’t know that you’re just putting orange dots, for example, on a piece of paper, it feels confident (sometimes consciously and sometimes subconsciously) that you are about to ruin your life, or do something that will exile you from the community, or cause you to be shamed or punished, or maybe it’s just that you’re being asked to face some emotion or past hurt that is difficult to be with. But you are actually just putting cheap paint on cheap paper, and as a result are building your capacity to trust yourself, take risks, and actively defy your inner critic, ie internalized oppression, in favor of your inner wisdom, ie your intuition. As you move through these insecurities and judgments about the painting, you are actually healing your judgments and insecurities about yourself, and beginning to release internalized oppressions’ hold on you.
The beautiful complexity of this work is that it is just cheap paint and cheap paper and means absolutely nothing, and it also has the potential to be the deepest, most intimate, authentic work you will ever do.
All classes take place online over zoom. After you register you will receive a welcome letter with zoom details, instructions on how to set up your studio space, and recommendations for supplies (although you are welcome to use any supplies you have on hand). Class sizes are limited to keep the circle intimate. All of my classes are open to anyone over the age of 18, while centering those with marginalized identities.
These special classes are drop-ins, feel free to join for just one session or as many as you like. These are a great way to get a feel for Intuitive Painting for Liberation without the full time and money commitment of my regular monthlong sessions. Each class will be the same as my monthly classes with a stronger focus on teaching the principles and practices for folks who are new. Participants are welcome to attend any number of drop-in classes. I can’t wait to see you in our creative sanctuary!

First of all, this is not an art class! This is a dynamic, embodied Liberation practice using paint. Whether you have a regular creative or painting practice, you have never painted before, or even if you consider yourself a "non-artist", this space is for you. You don’t need any art or painting experience to join and fully participate and benefit from this practice.
Each monthly series includes 4 weekly classes taught over zoom. I offer classes in monthly session to build greater safety and community within the group as we co-create our sacred creative container together. Each class is 3 hours long to ensure everyone has plenty of time to deepen into their creative expression and receive as much 1:1 support as they need. One way that oppression shuts us down is through controlling our bodies and our movements so each class begins with light somatics/movement to help us arrive and get into our bodies. This is followed by a sacred sharing circle where we are invited to be witnessed in our wholeness, whatever that means for us that day, and to share anything that needs to be witnessed in that moment. Rather than viewing anyone’s feelings or experience as a problem to fix or a challenge to solve by offering advice, feedback or suggestions, what we offer in this space instead is our loving presence and deep trust in each persons’ intuition and capacity to take care of themselves. Next I will lead us in a brief meditation and then everyone will begin to paint. If there are new students I will give a teaching on the principles and practices of our practice and get them started. As everyone paints, I will be present to witness everyones’ experience and will work with people 1:1 as their process unfolds.
At the end of class we will close with a short sharing circle so that people can share anything that came up for them in the session to be complete for the day.
Please be aware that you will need a computer or other electronic device, a high speed internet connection, some paints, paper (this is preferred over canvas whenever possible), brushes and a place in your home or studio where you can set up to paint.
All classes and tuition fees are non-refundable and non-transferable. Credit or refunds will not be given for missed sessions and rescheduling is not allowed due to the intimate nature of the group. Thank you.
